So it begins. It's time to stampede through the roster and count down the 99 days remaining until USF football makes its 2012 season debut against Chattanooga on September 1. Every day, we'll highlight a player on the roster whose number matches the number of days to go until the opening kickoff, whether it's a household name like B.J. Daniels or a scout-teamer like Baylin Trujillo or Miles Bennett.
If people switch numbers along the way, we'll introduce them with their new number unless we already did a story on them. And we'll make sure to catch up with incoming freshmen and anyone else we miss.
Also, on days when no one wears a certain number, we'll run a list of everyone who has ever worn that number at USF and tell you a little bit about each of them. In addition, we may have a few Stampede Bonuses like we did last year, to talk about some of our favorite oddball stories and forgotten players in USF history.
First up on our countdown is a junior-college star who Skip Holtz and Chris Cosh will be looking to for big things this season.
#99 DE Tevin Mims
Junior (JUCO), 6'3", 250 lbs.
Stats in 2011: Last year Mims played at Navarro Junior College in Corsicana, Texas, recording 19 tackles (seven for loss), and four sacks, plus three passes broken up.
Current Spot on Depth Chart: Mims was listed as Ryne Giddins' backup at left defensive end on the spring depth chart.
How Did He Get To USF? Mims was originally signed by Texas in the class of 2009 after a standout career at Stony Point High School in Round Rock, Texas. He played as a true freshman in 2009, then redshirted and left the team to play at Navarro. USF signed him as part of the class of 2012, where he enrolled in January so he could practice in spring. Mims will have two years of eligibility at USF.
Recruiting Rankings: As a member of this year's class, Mims received three stars from Rivals, two from Scout, and three from 247. When he originally signed at Texas in 2009, Mims was a four-star recruit at Rivals, but still only two from Scout.
Projected Playing Time In 2012: Mims should get a lot of action in the defensive line rotation. He has two really good players ahead of him in Giddins and Julius Forte, but Mims will have his chances, even if both of them are healthy and productive.
