Bull-ogosphere: Stan Heath Adds Backcourt Help

Several news items to get to, so let's just jump right in:

• JC point guard Corey Allen Jr. has signed with USF. Coach Heath describes him as a "combo guard who can make a lot of plays - both scoring the ball and being able to find guys with his passing ability." Hopefully that means he can give Anthony Collins a rest at the point.

Allen is from St. Louis, but played juco basketball in Southern California, where he won conference player of the year. There's not a lot of recruiting info on Allen, but this article says he was being recruited by Mountain West schools, particularly Hawaii, where one of his JC teammates went. Here's his Mt. San Antonio JC bio and press conference announcing his signing with the Bulls.

Of course, this hints at roster attrition. Allen is the 7th signee this class, while 7 scholarship players are slated to return. Not including Shaun Noriega, who, last we heard, was seeking an medical redshirt. Heath has signed beyond his apparent roster space in the past, and in the past we've seen existing players leave later. That is likely the case here.

• ESPN Big East blogger Andrea Adelson's post-spring power ratings for the conference have USF.... fifth? Yes, fifth out of ten teams. Sixth is Houston (quarterback issues), followed by SMU (lost the most starters), UConn (more questions than any team in the league), Temple (complete revamp in scheme), and Memphis (don't have the depth or physicality to challenge in the new league). Not that USF also doesn't have most of those problems, but it is a reminder that the new league's difficulty level is going to be lower.
• Another wild quarterback has appeared! Arkansas' Brandon Mitchell is officially transferring out after losing the position battle to Brandon Allen. Mitchell played mostly as a wide receiver during Arkansas' lost 2012 season, attempting only 8 passes (and completing 2). Though he did have this nice trick play against Auburn:

Mitchell saw only garbage time in 2010-11, though Arkansas did have Tyler Wilson and Ryan Mallett around. Mitchell is on track to graduate this summer, which would make him eligible to play in 2013 as a graduate transfer. The rumor mill wasted no time speculating that USF could be a landing spot for him. (UPDATE 5/8: ESPN's Joe Schad says USF is among five schools Mitchell is considering.)

• Two former USF soccer players have joined MLS: Brenton Griffiths (Colorado Rapids) and Ashani Fairclough (Seattle Sounders). Neither has gotten into a game yet; Griffiths is playing with the reservers. Kevin Olali was also an MLS draft choice by the Sounders, but is no longer with the club. Sebastien Thuriere signed with the local United Soccer League team, whatever name other than "Rowdies" it's going by at the moment.
• The NCAA Men's Golf Regionals field has been announced. In line with previous speculation, USF was sent to the Tallahassee region, where head coach Chris Malloy was previously any assistant. In another little spot of luck, it's a 13-team regional instead of 14, which makes one fewer team to beat to make the top five and the national finals.
