While we come up with some more original stories to tide us over until August 4, here's another collection of USF stories for you to read:
-- We only have to make it to August 4 because that's when USF football players report for fall practice. Then the team hits the field the next day. Who knows if the team will make another trip to Vero Beach, but with a new coach and the TV money actually going down, that's a pretty obvious place to cut corners.
Herget Earns Freshman All-America Honors - GoUSFBulls.com
Freshman pitcher Jimmy Herget was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American on Wednesday. Herget's a really good pitcher and he's going to be a cornerstone of the USF pitching staff for the next two years. I just wish he didn't have to share this award with, seriously, 27 other starting pitchers.
Noriega leaving USF men’s basketball team | TBO.com
Shaun Noriega, who missed most of last season with a back injury, is transferring to tiny Edinburg, Texas, to play for UT-Pan American, where former USF assistant Andy Hipsher went a few weeks ago to coach alongside his father. Noriega graduated last month, so he will be eligible to play immediately. That would have taken care of USF's oversigning problem...
USF men's basketball coach Stan Heath says incoming guard Drew Davis will attend prep school this coming year, get to USF for 2014-15.
— Greg Auman (@gregauman) June 3, 2013
...except that this news had already done it. The Bulls are actually one player short now, so if a last-minute transfer pops up, Heath can bring them in if he wants. The 2014 class is going to be pretty small as it is (only Victor Rudd and Martino Brock are seniors), so it doesn't necessarily have to be a one-and-done, either.
USF women's hoops to open vs. Maryland | Tampa Bay Times
Women's basketball might be the worst off of everyone going from the Big East to the American. Nearly all of the old league's power is either already gone, or about to be. (Basically this league is going to be UConn and the 10 or 11 or however many dwarfs.) So Jose Fernandez will need to work on his sometimes suspect non-conference scheduling to make up for the loss of conference prestige. Adding home-and-homes with Maryland and Oklahoma State should help that.
All of the ballots for our Voodoo Five awards are in, and we'll publish the results on Monday. Here's a look back at 2012-13 by Joey Johnston, with lots of fun quotes that turned out really badly in hindsight.
Three USF Programs Receive APR Public Recognition - GoUSFBulls.com
The entire list of APR data will come out on Tuesday, but the men's and women's tennis teams, along with the softball team, have been recognized for perfect 1000 scores.
O’Neal Becomes Third Bull to Earn Trip to Eugene - GoUSFBulls.com
Finally, USF's athletic season is not over. Three field athletes will compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships this weekend in Eugene, Oregon. They are Matthew O'Neal in the triple jump, Courtney Andersen in the high jump, and Kevin Bell in the long jump.
