On to the 80s on our countdown, and here's the first member of USF's offense... although he does have some experience on the defensive line.
#89 TE Mitchell Wilcox
Redshirt Freshman, 6'4", 243 lbs.
2015 Stats: Mitchell redshirted last year. A good idea with Sean Price and Marlon Pope both seniors in 2015.
Position on Depth Chart: Wilcox is the backup to Elkanah Dillon at tight end on the post-spring chart.
How He Came to USF: Mitchell played both ways at Tarpon Springs High School. In his senior year, he caught 21 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns as a tight end. As a defensive lineman, Wilcox recorded 61 tackles, 17.5 for loss. Mitchell committed to USF early in the 2015 recruiting cycle and stuck with them all the way through.
Recruiting Rankings: 247, ESPN, and Rivals all gave Wilcox three stars.
Projected Playing Time: Before last year, when we didn't think Willie Taggart was really going to spread out the offense, we would have seen Wilcox second on the depth chart at tight end and said, "Oh, he's going to play all the time." Since then USF's started running a lot more four-wide and five-wide sets with no tight ends in the game. Still, the Bulls found ways to get Price, Pope, and Dillon meaningful playing time last year. I'm sure we'll see quite a bit of Wilcox on offense this year, and plenty on special teams too.
Follow Him On... Mitchell's private Instagram feed is at mitch_w89, and his Twitter is @wilcox_mitchell. He retweeted my Marlon Gonzalez profile from one of those USF newsbot accounts, so he must know this post was coming. Thanks for reading!
