The USF Football Scholarship Tracker

Answering the age-old questions of college football like “how many can we sign?” and “who’s on scholarship?”

Charlie Strong’s extreme verbal commitment success so early in the process has been fantastic to behold for fans of USF. But there’s been one lingering question:

How can you sign all these kids? Aren’t there rules about this kind of thing?

Well yes, there are rules. They are:

  • A maximum of 85 players on scholarship.
  • No more than 25 scholarships added in a single academic year.

Notice that’s academic year, so players who enroll in January via transfer or graduating high school early can be “back-counted” towards the previous year’s class. And that’s a big caveat likely to help the Bulls in 2018.

By our count:

  • There are 81 USF football players currently on scholarship.
  • The Bulls only signed just 23 towards the 2017-18 class, and could “back-count” two more for this year via early enrollment.
  • There are 19 current players on scholarship whose eligibility will expire after the 2017 season.

We show our work below.

So by this math, USF can add 23 full scholarships for the 2018-19 class before any attrition on the current roster. And if just four more current scholarship players are no longer with the Bulls next year, they could add up to 27 players (25 signees for 18-19, 2 back-counts).

Because of the nature of verbal commitments, USF should of course keep recruiting. And we’re sure there are private discussions between USF coaches, current players, and recruits that we’re not aware of which affect this count in ways we just don’t know.

But for now, this is the math as we can decipher it.

NOTE: USF is playing coy about confirming some of this, so this is merely our pretty-educated guess. If there is an error, we’ll update it. Also we’ve got all the info going back five years on a fancy spreadsheet, and we’re trying to find a way to keep a permanent page updated. These things change from year to year.
