In the first Wednesday Fun Belt game of the season, everyone got Appalachian State and the under right. Three of you need further results to win a parlay, but you can’t win a parlay if you lose the first game. Well done to everyone there.
You’ll notice I root for the players to win. It’s more fun that way. I’m like a game show host: I have to enforce the rules, but I do like it when people win, and it doesn’t cost me anything if you do. I have a bank vault full of fake money.
But I’m not above trying to trick you. This week’s lines had some examples of sucker bets - bets no one should ever take. I don’t do this intentionally; PYU lines are a composite of real-life sports book offerings, and sometimes these situations arise. Here’s an example:

Can you spot the sucker bet? Take a moment and try to locate it.
Okay. The answer is... there are actually two. Possibly three.
First, look at the visiting team. You can bet them as a pick’em, (plus or minus no points), or you can take them to win the game outright for -107. The pick’em bet, being a point spread bet, pays -110 as all point spread bets do in PYU. A pick’em bet is essentially the same as a money line bet, so you’ve got two identical bets, one paying -110 and one paying a more favorable -107. The pick’em bet is the sucker bet. An effectively identical bet is available, in which you pay a lower fee to the house.
By the same token, the home team has -110 on the money line, and +1 for the point spread. The point spread also pays -110. So the house is giving you a free point to bet on the point spread instead of the money line. If the home team loses by 1, you push the bet instead of losing it. A small edge, you might say, but doing well in gambling is all about finding small edges.
What’s the third sucker bet? Remember, the Gambletron 2000 offers a random point spread at -102. If one of these plays is available, you could get it at the lower cost of -102.
By the way, if you do any real-life gambling, look for this phenomenon. Casinos will put out rows of identical video poker machines with identical rules, but significant differences in payout. I’ve seen it. Why get paid 6 for a full house if you can get paid 8? People don’t notice it. They won’t even listen if you try tell them. Gambling brings out weird things in people. So always be careful with it.
