The Great Narrowing has occurred.

Our contest leaders, chasing even greater totals to get ahead of each other, all took big losses instead, and fell back to the field. Meanwhile, a former champion hit a big score to creep into contention. Straight to the standings:

Let’s review what was a dramatic Saturday for our contest:

  • AAC Championship Game: Memphis had to come from behind to beat Cincinnati, falling behind 24-23 with 4:27 to play. This made a 9-point cover extremely problematic, and broke what could have been the championship-winning play:
Danj725 Appalachian State -6.0 points over Louisiana-Lafayette; Memphis -9.0 points over Cincinnati; Louisiana State -7.0 points over Georgia (WIN,LOSS,WIN) Appalachian State 45-38; Memphis 29-24; Louisiana State 37-10 500.00 LOSS -500.00

So, so close. LSU crushed Georgia, and Appalachian won by enough, but one garbage touchdown for Memphis would have given Danj725 $5777.21, and a nearly insurmountable lead.

But that wasn’t the only heartbreak to be had:

  • Big XII Championship Game: Baylor, reduced to playing third-string true freshman Jacob Zeno at quarterback, rallied in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. Again, it’s tough to cover 8 points when the game is this close late, and it cost two players:
Defdans Oklahoma -8.0 points over Baylor; Cincinnati +9.5 points over Memphis; Wisconsin +16.5 points over Ohio State (LOSS,WIN,WIN) Oklahoma 30-23; Memphis 29-24; Ohio State 34-21 200.00 LOSS -200.00
speruche Oklahoma -8.0 points over Baylor; Appalachian State -6.0 points over Louisiana-Lafayette; Florida Atlantic -7.5 points over Alabama-Birmingham (LOSS,WIN,WIN) Oklahoma 30-23; Appalachian State 45-38; Florida Atlantic 49-6 150.00 LOSS -150.00

That would have put Defdans at $2,059.31, and well-positioned for the final week. speruche would have been at $3,421.99, restoring his near-$1,000 lead from just a couple weeks ago.

  • MAC Championship Game: Speruche also lost on this one:
speruche Central Michigan -6.5 points over Miami (OH); Boise State -13.5 points over Hawaii; Louisiana State -7.0 points over Georgia (LOSS,WIN,WIN) Miami (OH) 26-21; Boise State 31-10; Louisiana State 37-10 175.00 LOSS -175.00

Again, the favorite fell behind, though this time they didn’t even come back to win the game.

  • Mountain West Championship Game: Oh, this game did soooooooo much damage.
HerdCountry941 Cincinnati +9.5 points over Memphis; Over 64.0 points in the Hawaii-Boise State game; Over 56.0 points in the Virginia-Clemson game (WIN,LOSS,WIN) Memphis 29-24; Boise State 31-10; Clemson 62-17 100.00 LOSS -100.00
jrjs Miami (OH) +6.5 points over Central Michigan; Over 48.5 points in the Alabama-Birmingham-Florida Atlantic game; Over 63.5 points in the Hawaii-Boise State game (WIN,WIN,LOSS) Miami (OH) 26-21; Florida Atlantic 49-6; Boise State 31-10 100.00 LOSS -100.00
jrjs Over 48.5 points in the Alabama-Birmingham-Florida Atlantic game; Over 63.5 points in the Hawaii-Boise State game; Over 53.5 points in the Wisconsin-Ohio State game (WIN,LOSS,WIN) Florida Atlantic 49-6; Boise State 31-10; Ohio State 34-21 100.00 LOSS -100.00
undercoverbull Over 64.0 points in the Hawaii-Boise State game Boise State 31-10 500.00 LOSS -500.00

Despite the stereotype of Mountain West football being a defense-optional pinball machine, Boise’s defense is actually pretty good. It’s rated in the top 40 overall according to Football Outsiders and other advanced metrics. Even Hawaii’s defense isn’t terrible.

This game was 3-3 approaching halftime, when a quarterback change spurred Boise to two quick TDs, and their defense held the rest of the way.

This one would have separated undercoverbull, speruche, and jrjs from the rest of the pack, and given HerdCountry941 a huge boost over $2,000. When this bet lost, the rest of the field won.

  • Big Ten Championship Game. This one is especially interesting because these two bets came in after the Boise game was resolved:
undercoverbull Ohio State -16.0 points over Wisconsin Ohio State 34-21 300.00 LOSS -300.00
speruche Virginia +29.0 points over Clemson; Over 56.0 points in the Virginia-Clemson game; Ohio State -16.0 points over Wisconsin (LOSS,WIN,LOSS) Clemson 62-17; Clemson 62-17; Ohio State 34-21 200.00 LOSS -200.00

Two of our three leaders, having each suffered a setback, take another big swing at each other. But a lot of people played this game:

andrewpina Appalachian State -6.0 points over Louisiana-Lafayette; Louisiana State -7.0 points over Georgia; Ohio State -15.5 points over Wisconsin (WIN,WIN,LOSS) Appalachian State 45-38; Louisiana State 37-10; Ohio State 34-21 125.00 LOSS -125.00
anthonyvito Ohio State -16.0 points over Wisconsin Ohio State 34-21 50.00 LOSS -50.00
anthonyvito Ohio State -16.0 points over Wisconsin Ohio State 34-21 16.03 LOSS -16.03
briank19 Ohio State -16.0 points over Wisconsin Ohio State 34-21 30.00 LOSS -30.00
briank19 Louisiana State -7.0 points over Georgia; Ohio State -16.0 points over Wisconsin (WIN,LOSS) Louisiana State 37-10; Ohio State 34-21 20.00 LOSS -20.00
dsidwell31 Clemson -28.0 points over Virginia; Ohio State -16.0 points over Wisconsin (WIN,LOSS) Clemson 62-17; Ohio State 34-21 125.00 LOSS -125.00
dsidwell31 Over 56.0 points in the Virginia-Clemson game; Over 56.0 points in the Wisconsin-Ohio State game (WIN,LOSS) Clemson 62-17; Ohio State 34-21 125.00 LOSS -125.00
ElliotMoore Appalachian State -6.0 points over Louisiana-Lafayette; Ohio State -15.5 points over Wisconsin (WIN,LOSS) Appalachian State 45-38; Ohio State 34-21 90.00 LOSS -90.00
Gibbsak Over 56.0 points in the Wisconsin-Ohio State game Ohio State 34-21 25.00 LOSS -25.00
HerdCountry941 Wisconsin +600.0 money line to beat Ohio State Ohio State 34-21 25.00 LOSS -25.00
HerdCountry941 Under 57.0 points in the Wisconsin-Ohio State game Ohio State 34-21 25.00 WIN 22.73
McIntyre2K7 Over 54.5 points in the Georgia-Louisiana State game; Over 54.0 points in the Virginia-Clemson game; Over 55.0 points in the Wisconsin-Ohio State game (LOSS,WIN,PUSH) Louisiana State 37-10; Clemson 62-17; Ohio State 34-21 300.00 LOSS -300.00
McIntyre2K7 Baylor +9.0 points over Oklahoma; Clemson -28.5 points over Virginia; Wisconsin +16.5 points over Ohio State (WIN,WIN,WIN) Oklahoma 30-23; Clemson 62-17; Ohio State 34-21 1.30 WIN 7.80
Oak1787 Over 56.0 points in the Virginia-Clemson game; Wisconsin +16.5 points over Ohio State; Over 56.0 points in the Wisconsin-Ohio State game (WIN,WIN,LOSS) Clemson 62-17; Ohio State 34-21; Ohio State 34-21 100.00 LOSS -100.00

As you can see, it wasn’t just our leaders making big plays late in the season. HerdCountry941, McIntyre2K7, andrewpina, dsidwell31, Oak1787, and ElliotMoore all took a big stab at moving up the standings, and all came really close to doing it. But the game went far against what was expected, with Wisconsin leading 21-7 at the half.

The over-under bet was especially cruel. The point amount varied over the course of the week, so some players won and others lost on the over. Also, Wisconsin drove all the way to the 10 yard line as time expired. A garbage-time score would have given dsidwell31 and Oak1787 big wins.

And finally, special mention has to go to julmiste4heisman, for not calling it quits when he was down to $2.86 of fake money. He bet on the AAC Championship game, and won! Since 1-3 players typically lose their entire $1,000 fake dollars each season, it’s a little bit of an accomplishment to end with something. Depending on how the Army-Navy game goes, he may also win a weekly award; $2.60 is currently good for third place on the week. (I know, I need to get those published.)

Finally, we have to talk about the remaining Futures bets:

BullsOnParade96 Cincinnati at +450 to win Conference Championship game 50.00 LOSS -50.00
bullsonparade96 Oregon at +800 to qualify for 4-team playoff 50.00 LOSS -50.00
Danj725 Cincinnati at +450 to win Conference Championship game 20.00 LOSS -20.00
Defdans Oklahoma at +350 to qualify for 4-team playoff 19.00 WIN 66.50
E-Dogg42 Ohio State at +300 to qualify for 4-team playoff 25.00 WIN 75.00
E-Dogg42 Clemson at +250 to have one of its players win Heisman Trophy 15.00 UNLIKELY -15.00
E-Dogg42 Ohio State at +850 to have one of its players win Heisman Trophy 15.00 UNLIKELY -15.00
GaryStephen Virginia at +1600 to win Conference Championship game 6.25 LOSS -6.25
gym399 Georgia at +300 to win Conference Championship game 50.00 LOSS -50.00
jrjs Utah at +300 to win Conference Championship game 10.00 LOSS -10.00
jrjs Memphis at +300 to win Conference Championship game 10.00 WIN 30.00
jrjs Cincinnati at +450 to win Conference Championship game 10.00 LOSS -10.00

Winnings for the remaining futures bets will be dispersed after the Army-Navy game, and before bowl season starts. I’m not doing it now, because I don’t want players gaining additional bankroll during a week.

The big winner here is E-Dogg42, who is currently at $-10 but will pick up $75 that will at least let him play bowl season. He is also going to exercise his Sudden Death bet on Army-Navy, so he could go into bowl season with a decent bankroll. This is explicitly allowed in Rule 11.1. He’d still have to overcome the $500 lost, though.

As a reminder: Week 15 is not over. The Army-Navy game is part of Week 15, and you may bet it if you have bankroll remaining from the December 7 games. After that game is played, we’ll tally everything up and prepare for bowl season.
