In the Week 2 picks thread, UndercoverBull asked if we could have a futures bet on coaches being fired.
Funny thing is, I almost included this in the game.
Just before the season started, I got an email from a gambling information site - running PYU gets me a lot of email like this - that offered a list of props, including First Coach To Be Fired. The odds it offered were:
- Clay Helton, USC: +600
- Randy Edsall, UConn: +800
- Brent Brennan, San Jose State: +1200
- Chris Ash, Rutgers: +1500
- Gus Malzahn, Auburn: +1800
- Willie Taggart, Florida State: +1900
- Lovie Smith, Illinois: +1900
- Justin Fuente, Virginia Tech: +3500
- Chad Morris, Arkansas: +4000
- Kalani Sitake, BYU: +7500
- Steve Addazio, Boston College: +9000
- Chip Kelly, UCLA: +15000

So, before the season, you could have gotten +1900 on Willie Taggart being the first coach fired in 2019. The odds on that look a lot better, although he has competition. Other than Helton and Malzahn, none of the top candidates have won their way off the hot seat. And as we all know, a darkhorse candidate has emerged in Tampa.
The one I would have picked? Kalani Sitake. BYU has done nothing to suggest major improvement this year; opened the season with another drubbing by their hated rival; play other tough opponents early; and have an administration that’s relatively unrestrained by finances or oversight.
I decided not to add the “first coach fired” prop to the list of Futures bets, because it was kind of late to make a change, and I didn’t know how much interest the Futures bets in general would attract. I may do it next year, though.
