The Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy (the book, not the ill-conceived 2005 movie) describes Brockian Ultra Cricket as the most complex sport ever conceived. So much so that the only attempt to compile a rulebook collapsed under its own weight and created a black hole.

I can relate to that sometimes. Because once again, we must go deep into the PYU rulebook to solve a cancellation-related dilemma.

Western Kentucky was supposed to play Charlotte on Tuesday morning, in a game that was moved from last weekend. This game was cancelled. However, the teams changed their mind and moved it to Saturday, cancelling the FIU-Charlotte game originally scheduled for that day instead. PYU leader BullsOnParade96 had a parlay bet on WKU-Charlotte only.:

When the game was cancelled, the bet was refunded as per rule 8.3.3.2.1: “If all games in a parlay wager are cancelled or postponed, the entire bet is returned as per Rule 14.6.1.” However, rule 14.6.3 also says “If a game is moved to a later date/time within the same week at the same location, any bets placed will stand.” This game managed to partially satisfy both rules, by being cancelled and then reinstated within the same week. But there was no existing specific rule for this scenario. Somehow, I didn’t envision it.

I thought the fairest thing to do would be to give BullsOnParade96 the option to reinstate his original bet if desired. He chose not to. But this wouldn’t be the last cancellation for our leader:

That parlay was for 500 units, too. Those units were also refunded per the above rule, and may be re-bet if desired. It still counts towards weekly minimums. The Houston-SMU and Liberty cancellations also cost him two bets of a second 300Ų parlay (see list below), meaning Wisconsin-Indiana becomes a single bet. Other players dsidwell31, E-Dogg42, ElliotMoore, and ULhothot all had parlay components, or single bets, cancelled as well.

This is happening so much this year it’s figuring into the championship race. It’s hard to grow your bankroll when all your bets get cancelled. The year 2020 has added a new facet to sports gambling: predicting which games will actually be played!

Some of you posted clever ideas on Twitter about new wagers, like an over-under bet on how many of your own games will actually be played. I like the ideas, but honestly, they’re a little too complex to implement. Keep those cards and letters coming, though. I’m always looking to add new little prop bets.

New wagers can be made up until kickoff, as long as you have enough bankroll left to spend. Grow at least three extra legs; you won’t need them, but it keeps the crowds amused. After you score a hit, run away as fast as you can and apologize from a safe distance. The winning team shall be the first team that wins.
