The bad news is there were very few upsets in Round 1 of The Bread Bracket. Only tandoor (in an 8/9 matchup) and jalapeno cheddar bread (by one vote!) survived from the lower seeds. The good news is we have some powerhouse matchups in the second round.

If you want to skip down to the voting, that’s fine. If you want to see how I filled out my own bracket and yell at me in the comments, keep reading.
My bracket had some surprises. Tortillas were sent packing right away, even to a bland, tasteless product like farl, because tortillas are not bread. This led to panettone making a Cinderella run to the Sweet 16, based solely on the chocolate chip panettone Target sells around Christmas, which is fantastic. Try making French toast with it. Wow... so calories... very saturated fat. Challah also lost to humble white bread, because I am extremely Caucasian.
Anyway, the upsets started flying in after that. Cuban bread was knocked off by the highly underrated potato bread. Ciabatta was stunned by brioche in the Sweet 16, while Kings Hawaiian took a terrible beat by having to face off against sourdough. Then in the Elite 8, a couple of true shockers. Yeast rolls took down cornbread, because too often I get cornbread that still has whole kernels of corn in it. And biscuits prevailed over croissants, which are buttery and delicious but are a bit too delicate and leave a ton of crumbs everywhere. That’s how you get ants.
In my Final Four, biscuits finally ended the magical run of yeast rolls, but there was only ever going to be one winner in my bracket, and that was sourdough, the king of all breads.

We’ll see if any other TDS staffers have the courage to post their full bracket and face the wrath and dunking on of the Internet. In the meantime, voting on the second round starts now. Polls close Friday night. Winners advance to the Sweet 16. Losers get fed to the ducks!
