THE BREAD BRACKET: Round of 16

Most of the heavyweights are still in the running and the matchups are getting tougher and tougher. Time to vote in the Round of 16.

We’re back with the content that most of you have been waiting for... Round of 16 action in THE BREAD BRACKET.

After a tame first round, a few upsets spiced up the second round. Cinnamon swirl bread, mass produced with HFCS and available in grocery store bread aisles everywhere, shocked focaccia to become the lowest seed in the Sweet(bread) 16. Banana bread was the other lower seed to move on, knocking off pan de queso. Beyond that the top seeds survived, but there were some closer than expected victories. Pretzels had to fight off tortillas, which is strange to me because tortillas are not bread. Meanwhile pretzel rolls, the softer, even chewier cousin of pretzels, struggled past a defiant pita bread, the least interesting of all the flatbreads.

Before we let you have your say, here’s another completed bracket from a member of the Bread Bracket selection committee.

GenGen picked a very upset-heavy solo breads region, but the chalk prevailed everywhere else. She said her bracket is “busted” already because roti got knocked out in the first round, but it’s important to tell everyone there is no such thing as a busted bread bracket. Whatever breads you like are totally fine. This is all about personal preference and we’re not here to jud — WAIT SHE PUT WHOLE WHEAT PAST SOURDOUGH? GENGEN YOU ABSOLUTE MONSTER. We are no longer friends.

Anyway, with that unpleasantness behind us, it’s time to vote. I am expecting some knock-down, drag-out fights in this round. Polls close on Thursday night. Winners move on to the Elite Ate. Losers get left on the counter until they grow mold!
