South Florida Bulls head coach Jeff Scott released the initial depth chart ahead of Saturday’s season opener versus The Citadel. There are a few surprises atop the depth chart so far.
As reported earlier this week, redshirt sophomore Jordan McCloud will get the start on Saturday. Alcorn State transfer Noah Johnson, and UNC transfer Cade Fortin co-backups.
Senior Michael Wiggs has won the right guard spot, and fellow senior Jarrett Hopple has been tabbed as the starting right tackle. Both have had their struggles during their USF career, and have true freshmen backing them up. The right side needs to be consistent for this offense to work.
Another beleaguered senior has finally made a name for themselves. Wide receiver DeVontres Odoms-Dukes is listed alongside Latrell Williams as co-starting WR opposite Randall St. Felix. Bryce Miller won the slot WR job, and freshman Omarion Dollison, and Terrence Horne will back him up.
NIU transfer Mitchell Brinkman has won the starting TE job. Chris Carter and Jacob Mathis are listed as “OR” for the backup position.
Sophomore running back Kelley Joiner has won the starting job. Oregon transfer Darrian Felix, and redshirt sophomore Johnny Ford are backing him up.
Junior Darrien Grant won the defensive end battle. Tyrone Barber will back him up.
Speedy kicker Spencer Shrader has won the kicking job over two-time Lou Groza Award semifinalist Jared Sackett.
In total, 15 freshmen have made their debut on the two—sometimes three—deep. 17 sophomores are on the depth chart.
The Bulls open the season this Saturday at 7 p.m. versus The Citadel on ESPNU.
