The South Florida Bulls women’s basketball team used a 32-point second quarter to snuff out the Houston Cougars 71-38 on senior night inside the Yuengling Center on Wednesday.
Sydni Harvey, Shae Leverett, Bethy Mununga, and Elisa Pinzan were all honored before the game for their efforts during their time at USF.
The Bulls (22-7, 12-3 AAC) had not shot the ball well during AAC play this season, but made 13-of-17 shot in the second period, including a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc to blow the game open.
Elena Tsineke (13 points), Maria Alvarez (13 points), and Bethy Mununga (12 points) each nearly out-scored the Cougars individually in the opening half to take a 49-16 lead into the locker room.
The scoring outburst couldn’t have come at a better time as the AAC Tournament begins on Monday in Forth Worth.
Full disclosure: I was writing this recap and then Maria Alvarez injured her left knee, and was in visible pain. It’s the same knee in which she tore her ACL as a freshman.
Frankly the outcome doesn’t matter so much anymore. Get better soon Maria. Head coach Jose Fernandez said Alvarez will have an MRI on Thursday to determine the injury.
