We are nothing if not thorough.

#1 Rocky D. Bull
43rd Year Senior, approx. 7’0”, weight unknown

2015 Stats: Rocky did not throw or catch any passes, run for any yards, or make any tackles last year. However, he carried flags, ran countless miles, entertained tens of thousands of people, and did a total of 1668 push-ups when USF put points on the scoreboard.

Position on Depth Chart: Rocky was not listed on the most recent depth chart.

How He Came To USF: In the early 1960s, after being told their class rings would have a blank panel on them if they didn’t pick a nickname, USF students settled on the brahman bull. It was a long, tedious process that saw nicknames like Sailfish, Camels, Desert Rats, and even Chickens rejected. A few years later, a proper mascot was created as a toy for the campus bookstore to sell. Once USF started playing sports, Rocky transitioned to the athletic department, which started drawing him on their newsletters.

It wasn’t until 1974 that a costumed Rocky mascot began showing up to basketball games and other sporting events. He was redesigned in the early 1980s when USF’s athletic logo changed, then again when the current logo was put in place. The Rocky we know today debuted October 31, 2003, at USF’s homecoming game against Cincinnati. When Under Armour took over as the apparel provider in 2008, Rocky switched numbers from #4 to #1.

#1 was nudged out of the starting lineup by a change in offensive strategy, but he’ll still see plenty of action.

#1 WR Chris Barr
Sophomore, 5’10’, 175 lbs.

2015 Stats: Barr played in every game as a true freshman and started 12 of them. He caught 23 passes for 200 yards, and scored USF’s first touchdown against UCF. He also made the best catch of last season, when he pinned a ball between his feet against SMU to secure the catch for a 38-yard gain.

Position on Depth Chart: With Rodney Adams’ move inside to slot receiver, Barr is now listed as his backup on the depth chart.

How He Came To USF: Chris played all over the field at Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, as you tend to do at a small school like that. Between rushing, receiving, and various returns, Barr racked up 2,618 all-purpose yards in his four varsity years. He scored 28 total touchdowns and helped the Conquerors win the Class 3A state title in both 2013 and 2014. Chris was another somewhat unexpected pull in the 2015 recruiting class. He had been committed to Utah for awhile and hadn’t even listed USF in his top five before the 2014 season, but they got him on an official visit in January and he switched to USF a week before signing day. Other offers Chris turned down came from UCF, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, and a few others.

Here are Barr’s high school highlights:

Recruiting Rankings: Barr was a three-star recruit on all of the major recruiting sites.

Projected Playing Time: The only reason Chris isn’t a starter again this year is because the wide receivers shifted around. He’ll still get regular playing time, and if there’s a reason for Adams to be moved back to the outside, Barr could find himself right back in the starting lineup.

USF’s multifaceted running back now wears #2 and should continue getting the ball in a variety of ways.

#2 RB D’Ernest Johnson
Junior, 5’10”, 208 lbs.

That’s Pronounced... DEE-er-nest. Sound out the entire letter D.

2015 Stats: Only one player recorded rushing yards, receiving yards, kick return yards, and punt return yards for USF last season. It was D’Ernest Johnson. He had 71 carries for 307 yards, 26 catches for 256 yards, 21 kickoff returns for 563 yards, and a 25-yard punt return. He finished with 1,251 all-purpose yards, behind only Marlon Mack and Rodney Adams, and scored five touchdowns. If that wasn’t enough, he was also 2-for-2 for 63 yards and two touchdowns as a passer.

Willie Taggart always tells his players to #DoSomething if they want one of the coveted single-digit uniform numbers. In Johnson’s case, he earned the right to wear his old high school number by doing everything.

Position on Depth Chart: Johnson is a backup running back as well as USF’s primary kick and punt returner on the current depth chart.

Watch List Watch: Johnson is on the preseason watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, an honor given to college football’s most versatile player.

How He Came To USF: D’Ernest is another Immokalee High School product. As multitalented as he is for USF, he was even more so for the Indians: running and catching the ball, returning kicks, playing linebacker for a time, and even punting his senior year. He racked up 2,859 all-purpose yards and 28 touchdowns in his last two years of high school, plus 51 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and an 80-yard touchdown pass. Immokalee reached the Class 5A state title game in 2012 and Johnson was named an all-state honorable mention player.

Johnson also had an incredible 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown his senior year. Have you seen this play? You need to see this play.

D’Ernest’s college recruitment came down to the wire, but he chose USF in February 2014 over offers from Louisville, Georgia, Ole Miss, and West Virginia, among others.

Recruiting Rankings: Johnson was a four-star prospect on Rivals, a high three-star prospect on ESPN, and a three-star on 247 and Scout.

Projected Playing Time: All three of USF’s running backs have a defined role, making their depth chart positions irrelevant. D’Ernest is mainly the pass-catching, third-down running back. Johnson actually had the second-most catches and receiving yards on the team last year, becoming a very handy security blanket for Quinton Flowers. He will also continue returning kicks alongside Rodney Adams, and he surprisingly took the punt return job away from Tajee Fullwood. The coaches did a great job finding ways to get the ball in D’Ernest’s hands last year. That trend should continue this year.

USF’s all-conference #3 could get himself into NFL Draft consideration with another season like the one he had in 2015.

#3 CB Deatrick Nichols
Junior, 5’10”, 189 lbs.

That’s Pronounced: DEE-trick.

2015 Stats: Nichols settled right into the starting lineup and started all 13 games at cornerback. He logged 62 tackles, 8.5 for loss, and led the team with four interceptions. Deatrick scored USF’s only defensive touchdown of the 2015 season with a 29-yard interception return against Cincinnati. He also had one sack, broke up five passes, forced two fumbles, and recovered one. Nichols was named first team all-American Athletic Conference last year, and he received USF’s Most Improved Player award after the season.

Position on Depth Chart: Nichols is again one of USF’s starting cornerbacks.

Watch List Watch: Nichols is on preseason watch lists for the Jim Thorpe Award (for the nation’s best defensive back) and the Bednarik Award (for the best defensive player).

How He Came To USF: Deatrick played cornerback and ran track at powerhouse Miami Central High School. He made 105 career tackles, 12 interceptions, and two forced fumbles for the Rockets despite missing much of his senior year due to injury. Central won three state titles during Nichols’s time there, including each of his last two seasons. USF had a bit of an advantage in recruiting Deatrick because his former high school coach was Telly Lockette, who joined Willie Taggart’s staff in 2013. He committed in May of that year and signed onto USF’s 2014 recruiting class over offers from Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Tennessee, and UCLA.

Recruiting Rankings: Nichols was a three-star prospect on all the major recruiting sites.

Projected Playing Time: A lot. Every single play if he can manage it and if the defense needs him on the field. Nichols deserved that most improved award last year for going from a reserve defensive back as a freshman to a first-team all-conference starter as a sophomore. Usually you don’t want cornerbacks getting really high tackle numbers — it means they gave up a lot of completions. But in Nichols’ case it’s OK because he was making plays in run coverage near and behind the line of scrimmage. There are already a couple of draftniks raving about Deatrick’s ability, and another all-conference-type season could see him become a sleeper NFL prospect.

USF’s other #4 came highly touted, but hasn’t found a spot yet in the Bullsharks defense.

#4 DE/LB Jimmy Bayes
Redshirt Sophomore, 6’3”, 228 lbs.

2015 Stats: Bayes played in five games last season. He saw a few snaps at linebacker and played on special teams, but didn’t record any statistics.

Position on Depth Chart: Jimmy wasn’t listed on either the post-spring depth chart or the chart released Monday.

How He Came To USF: Bayes played at Immokalee High School. He was a Class 5A all-state third team selection in his senior year, when he recorded 78 tackles, 8.5 TFL, six forced fumbles, a sack, and a blocked field goal for the Indians as an outside linebacker. Jimmy committed to USF’s 2014 recruiting class over a year early, in January 2013. He was one of the rare early commits who stuck all the way through to signing day, even after offers came in from Louisville, West Virginia, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, Missouri, and others.

We didn’t make it to Bayes on last year’s countdown, so here are his Immokalee highlights if you haven’t seen them before.

Recruiting Rankings: Jimmy was one of the big prizes of USF’s 2014 recruiting class. ESPN and Rivals gave him four stars, while 247 and Scout gave him three.

Projected Playing Time: Bayes seems like a player without a position right now. He’s too small to play defensive end, and there are too many good linebackers on the roster for him to get much playing time there. He had to bulk up in his redshirt year to reach college linebacker size. Could he slim back down to play in the secondary? Is he even fast enough and capable enough in pass coverage to play there? We trust USF will eventually figure out the right place to put him on the field, because he certainly has the talent to contribute somewhere. For now, though, that somewhere will continue to be on special teams.

Even after his escape from L.A., the hits keep on coming for USF’s snakebitten #4.

#4 QB Asiantii Woulard
Sophomore, 6’3”, 215 lbs.

That’s Pronouced... A-SHAWN-tee.

2015 Stats: Woulard sat out last season after transferring from UCLA.

Position on Depth Chart: Woulard was listed as a backup on the post-spring depth chart, but doesn’t appear on the chart released earlier this week. He had been passed by Brett Kean as USF’s backup quarterback, and then suffered a broken foot in practice last week, putting him out indefinitely.

How He Came To USF: Bulls fans are probably more aware of Asiantii Woulard’s recruitment story than anyone else’s. He played high school football at Winter Park High School and committed to USF in February 2012. (It only seems like it was 20 years ago.) He decommitted and then recommitted again in June. After going to Nike’s Elite 11 competition in Beaverton, Oregon, and winning, he stayed on board until Coach Who Shall Not Be Named was fired that December. Woulard decommitted again and ended up signing with UCLA in February 2013. After a redshirt year, Woulard didn’t play in 2014. When it became apparent stud freshman and early enrollee Josh Rosen would become the Bruins’ starting quarterback in 2015, Asiantii announced he would transfer and eventually chose USF. Third time’s a charm.

USF unsuccessfully attempted to get Woulard eligible to play right away last year. Instead, he was given a year of eligibility back at the end of his career. Beginning this season, he has three years of eligibility left.

Recruiting Rankings: Asiantii was a four-star prospect across the board. 247 and ESPN both rated him their #1 dual-threat quarterback* in the class of 2013.

* - We hate this phrase and only used it because 247 and ESPN classify quarterbacks that way.

Projected Playing Time: What a truly bizarre and frustrating 12 months Woulard has had. He went from transferring home, to maybe being USF’s starting quarterback and reclaiming his bright football future if he could get a waiver, to not getting the waiver and having to sit out the season, to watching Quinton Flowers take a firm grip on the job, to having Brett Kean pass him as the backup, to having Chris Oladokun nipping at his heels as QB3, to breaking his foot. It’s unclear how long his injury will keep Woulard sidelined. Even if hadn’t been hurt, though, he might not have played at all this year. We hope he’s finding some kind of positive in all this, because it would be driving us insane if we were in his position.

In our final roster countdown catchup post, we'll meet USF's three new transfers.

Let's meet the three new transfers on USF's roster. One of them will be a big help in 2017 and beyond. The other two could play for the Bulls as soon as this weekend.

#44 P Jonathan Hernandez - Redshirt Sophomore, 6'4", 241 lbs.
#45 K Brandon Behr - Junior(?), 5'11", 187 lbs.
#79 OL Grant Polk - Redshirt Freshman, 6'6", 295 lbs.

2015 Stats: We'll cover that in each player's bio.

Position on Depth Chart: Polk is not listed on the current depth chart. Meanwhile, we only found out about Hernandez and Behr being on the team because they're on the two-deep that USF put out Monday afternoon. Hernandez could be USF's starting punter on Saturday. Behr is listed behind Emilio Nadelman as the Bulls' kicker and kickoff specialist.

How They Came To USF:

Jonathan Hernandez: Went to Bradenton Manatee High School, where he was a kicker and punter (and soccer player) for the Hurricanes. Averaged 41.4 yards per punt in his one varsity year, kicked off 42 times with 31 touchbacks, and made all seven extra points he attempted. After a year off, he walked on at Florida State in 2014. Didn't play that year and redshirted. Punted once last season for the Seminoles for 37 yards. Was a walk-on at FSU and is a walk-on here, making him eligible to play immediately after transferring over the summer. Doesn't have a full highlight reel, but you can see his individual reels here. IS LISTED AT 241 POUNDS AND IT LOOKS LEGIT. HE WEIGHS 75 POUNDS MORE THAN THE GUY WHO WOULD BE SNAPPING HIM THE BALL. HE IS MY NEW FAVORITE PLAYER.

Brandon Behr: Kicked at Fleming Island High School in Fleming Island, Florida, a town about 20 miles south of Jacksonville. Twice reached the state football playoffs and also won a state soccer title with the Golden Eagles. Joined Jacksonville University's football team in 2012 and played three seasons after a redshirt year. Made 27 of 41 field goals and 87 of 90 extra points as the Dolphins' placekicker, with a long of 50 yards. Completed his bachelor's degree in finance and came to USF to get a master's degree. Eligible to play as a walk-on this year because Jacksonville doesn't give out football scholarships. Should probably be classified as a 5th year senior, not a junior.

Grant Polk: Played with true freshman Elijah Mack at Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda, after moving down from Owen High School in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Was named Class 7A all-state first team as a senior in 2014. Enrolled early at Virginia in January 2015 and redshirted that season. After the coaching change from Mike London to Bronco Mendenhall, Polk decided to transfer to USF. He must sit out this season, but will have three years of eligibility beginning next season.

Recruiting Rankings: Hernandez and Behr were not rated by the major recruiting sites. Polk was a three-star prospect at 247, Rivals, ESPN, and Scout.

Projected Playing Time: Hernandez might actually get the punting nod this Saturday. Brent Gordon didn't have a great game when he was a last-minute sub in the Miami Beach Bowl, and from what we heard he was still struggling a bit during fall practice. Jonathan could shore up possibly the weakest position on the team. Behr is unlikely to replace Emilio Nadelman as placekicker unless Nadelman hits a really rough spot and can't get out of it. But he or Hernandez could replace him on kickoff duty if they're able to put the ball into the end zone consistently and take pressure off USF's maligned kick coverage unit.

We’ve told some stories about players in the six years we’ve been doing this series, but this might be the most unusual.

There’s only one new walk-on listed on USF’s fall roster, and has he got a story.

#25 WR Marcus Wingate
Junior, 5’8", 185 lbs.

2015 Stats: Wingate did not play football last year.

Position on Depth Chart: Marcus hasn’t been here long enough to be listed on a depth chart.

How He Came To USF: Wingate is so new to the team that he doesn’t have a bio page yet on the official site. In fact, we got most of this information from his LinkedIn profile. Here’s what we know:

Marcus played running back and cornerback at East Jordan High School in East Jordan, Michigan, a town in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula. (He doesn’t have a Hudl page and we can’t embed his highlight reel, so here’s the link.) Marcus came to USF in 2012, but not to play football. He enrolled as a regular student and took up some typical student jobs around athletics. He was an intramural referee, he was an intern in the sports information department, and he helped the football staff with recruiting.

Wingate left USF for a year to try his luck at college football. He went back to Michigan and enrolled at Grand Valley State, the winningest program in Division II history. But he didn’t get any game action and came back to USF, returning to the athletics office as an administrative assistant. Now he’s giving college football another chance as a walk-on.
