We've done a horrendous job covering our women's soccer team this year, and that's terrible work by us. More specifically by yours truly, because the Olympic sports are my deal, and I've gotten to all of one half of one match this season.
The ladies have been the Bulls' most successful fall sport, and continued a five-match win streak with a 1-0 win in extra time over Georgetown in the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament today in D.C. Junior Veronica Reid slotted home the game winner in the 109th minute for just the second win ever for USF in Big East postseason play.
The Bulls entered the match 46th in the RPI, have won five in a row, and now hold a 12-4-3 record. One of those four losses was to Georgetown, who was 17th in the RPI starting play today, and is now avenged. Unlike the men's bracket which only holds 48 bids, the women take 64. Therefore Voodoo Five officially declares it acceptable to tip the security guy, ask for a bottle list in the VIP, and cue up Stefani.
For the first time ever, USF Women's Soccer, welcome to the NCAAs.
But first coach Denise Schilte-Brown and her team will take on American Division champs Marquette (#10 in RPI, #13 in NSCAA poll) on Friday at 7:30, and the match will be on CBS College Sports Network. The winner gets the UConn-WVU winner in the final.
What a lot of Bulls fans might not know is women's soccer only became a varsity sport in 1996, and since USF has yet to play in the postsesaon, we're heading into uncharted territory here no matter the results. The Big East is also a top flight league, with three teams ranked in the Top 25 currently and Georgetown receiving votes, so the Bulls have been tested heading into tournament play.
Cliffs notes on the 2010 team so far so you're ready to jump on the bandwagon: Junior keeper Nicole McClure has eight clean sheets on the season, and an 0.77 GAA. Chelsea Klotz is the leading scorer, with 11 tallies in 19 matches, a strong strike rate at any level of football. Reid has nine goals as well as eight assists, which is a school record. And this might be the best part: five different players have multiple goals on the season, and all five return in 2011. It looks like this team is set not only to make some noise in 2010, but 2011 as well.
We'll keep you updated on both soccer teams as their seasons get down to crunch time, and it will be nice to have two sets of half hoops to follow in November. If anyone knows of some quality men's and women's soccer bracketology sites, point them out to us in the comments so we can see where we might be road tripping this month.
Full post on the men's team coming tomorrow. But for now... spin that record, babe, doop do do.
And don't give me any crap, you know it's the catchiest damn song that's ever been written. You don't like it? Write your own Bulls blog and play Soundgarden and Morrissey all day.
