Jawanza Poland Commits to USF

via blogs.kansas.com

Well, I guess we're still going to have a basketball program without Dominique Jones. Poland picked the Bulls over Oklahoma, Cincinnati, and West Virginia, so this looks like a nice pull.

Poland is 6'4" and 195 pounds, and was rated as one of the best junior college wing players in the country. (The same rating service, the Midwest Scouting Service - couldn't find a link - rated USF commit Hugh Robertson second at that position, just ahead of Poland.) Because he couldn't play last year after following his coach from Cowley College to Hutchinson (KS) Community College, he still has three years of eligibility upon arriving at USF. In his season at Cowley he scored 13.5 points per game and shot 38% from three-point range.

Interesting little bit from Tony Adame at the Wichita Eagle:

From my perspective, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a kid improve as much as JP did from his senior year of high school to his freshman year of college. Dude’s game just … grew up. Very mature on the court. I could see why he was so coveted when it came to recruiting.

It's only a coincidence that Poland is wearing #20 in that picture, but he will probably get the first chance to replace DoJo in the USF starting lineup.
