On this date in 1995, the Florida Board of Regents gave the official go-ahead for the University of South Florida to start a football program. I bet if anyone in that room had said that 15 years later, USF would be in the position it's currently in, they would have been institutionalized. It's been a spectacular rise that may never be duplicated -- and no one involved with USF athletics believes that that rise is done yet.
Here's an article from the September 15, 1995 edition of the St. Petersburg Times, announcing the impending approval of the program. You can click on the image to see a larger version if you're having trouble reading the newsprint.
A postscript -- C.B. Daniel died a couple of years ago, which is too bad because I would have loved for him to see USF playing his beloved Gators in the Swamp last weekend, being all economically feasible and stuff.
