USF's recruiting weekend didn't get off on the best foot when Alonso DE Anthony Chickillo declined to go on his official visit, but it finished strong with the verbal commitments of Jefferson WR Andre Davis, South Broward DE Clavion Nelson, and Greensboro Public West TE David Reeves. (UPDATE: USFNation has Reeves not committed, but USF still leads and could commit to USF soon according to 247.com's Josh Newberg.)
Let's start with Reeves, who comes to Tampa as the 35th-ranked TE according to Rivals.com. David chose the Bulls over schools like Georgia Tech, Duke, and Mississippi State. If you guys are worried about him not qualifying... don't. He is a very smart kid with a 3.8 GPA, which tells you why he had Duke and GT in his final four. Reeves is a big target at 6'5", 240 lbs., and he can still add a solid 20-30 pounds of muscle while he is here. He's the 2nd TE commit of this class, following Griffin HS (GA) TE Ty Turner. I wouldn't be surprised if Holtz redshirts both Reeves and Turner next season, just so they have an entire season to get stronger and learn the system. If you guys are up for a 12 minute highlight video, here is one from Reeves.

Clavion Nelson's commitment was first reported by Greg Auman, who received an email from Nelson earlier today. The 6'4", 230 lb. DE chose USF over Illinois and Kansas, who normally beat us for guys like Clavion. Nelson had a monster year for South Broward, collecting 65 tackles and an impressive 14.5 sacks this year for the Bulldogs. Clavion is the first DE committed to the Bulls this season, which wasn't a huge need with guys like Ryne Giddins, Julius Forte, Patrick Hampton, and Claude Davis coming back. But if a guy like Nelson wants to come aboard, you have to do it.
Finally, we get to the guy I was hoping would commit this weekend in Davis. Andre was more than excited to anncounce his commitment over Facebook today, and I doubt he goes to Rutgers or West Virginia for visits over the next couple of weeks. We talked about Davis' credentials on Friday, but I hope that this is the first step in creating the wall around the Tampa Bay area. We've had a horrible time recruiting elite players from schools like Jefferson, Plant, and Armwood over the years, and it seems like the tide is starting to turn -- getting guys like Giddins two years ago, Terrance Mitchell last season, and now Davis this year.
Robinson WR Ruben Gonzales and Armwood QB Josh Grady didn't commit this weekend, and both are going to complete their official visits to Iowa State and Wake Forest next week, respectively, but I think that at least one of the two will choose the Bulls on signing day. Still, getting a guy from Jefferson, which we've really struggled recruiting over the last couple of seasons, has to be encouraging. Let's just hope that it continues over the next couple of weeks with these two.
