Conference Expansion: Big East Allowed To Move To 12 Football Members

I wonder how the Big East Teleconference went this morning?

On a teleconference earlier today, our Presidents and Chancellors authorized the BIG EAST Conference to engage in formal discussions with additional institutions and are considering moving to a model that includes 12 football playing schools.

Well then.

Honestly this is good news for USF right now. The Bulls were stuck between a rock and a hard place when it came to a possible landing point, and seeing that the conference is finally doing something is good to see, although probably at least a year too late.

With the league trying to add up to six possible schools, the usual names of Air Force, Navy, UCF, Temple, and ECU are going to be mentioned as the conference's main targets. Air Force already looks like they are ready to move from the Mountain West, as they've already had talks with the Missouri Valley with moving their non-football sports there in preparation of a football-only invite from the Big East.

One big thing to note is that the conference just can't add 6 football-only schools. The Bylaw Blog tweeted last night that the Big East has to have eight full members playing eight women's and six men's sports within the Big East in order to compete in FBS football. This will give schools like Temple, ECU, and UCF (or even Villanova!) a chance to grab at least two of the six spots.

We will keep you updated if and when someone is actually given an invitation
