Stampeding Through The Roster: #83 Deonte Welch

83 days left until the opener against Notre Dame. Today we get to meet one of the surprise performers during spring practice.

#83 WR Deonte Welch

Redshirt Freshman, 6'0" 201 lbs.

Stats in 2010: Deonte used his redshirt last season.

Current Spot on Depth Chart:  #2 split end behind Evan Landi. Though it must be said again that the current depth chart does not include A.J. Love or Lindsey Lamar. Nor does it include incoming freshmen Andre Davis and Ruben Gonzalez, who Holtz has said will be given the chance to play as true freshmen.

How did he come to USF: From Williston High School, as part of Skip Holtz's first recruiting class in 2010.

Recruiting Rankings: Rivals, ESPN, and Scout all gave him three stars. Originally verballed to Arkansas. Also had offers from North Carolina State, Vanderbilt, and Tulane.

Projected Playing Time for 2011: Welch should crack the deep rotation at WR one way or the other this year. Welch had a great spring game, catching 6 balls for 110 yards, and his ability to hold onto the ball is something that Holtz will remember as we get into fall camp. He might not make the leap this season, but expect some big things from Deonte in 2012 and beyond.
