75 days left until the season opener against Notre Dame. Today, we meet a person who has been moved around more than anyone on the roster.
5th Year Senior, 6'3" 293 lbs.
Stats in 2010: Darren only played in three games last year as a reserve guard.
Current Spot on Depth Chart: Powe sits second on the post-spring depth chart at left tackle behind incumbent Mark Popek.
How did he come to USF: Darren signed with USF out of Lafayette High School in Mayo, FL
Recruiting Rankings: Powe actually came to USF as a 230 lb weakside defensive end. Scout and Rivals both pegged Powe as a two-star recruit out of high school. Powe chose USF over offers from Southern Miss and Middle Tennessee State.
Projected Playing Time for 2011: Darren has never been able to stick at one position while at USF. After redshiritng as a defensive end, Powe gained 30 pounds and spent 2008 as a reserve nose tackle. Facing a numbers crunch at DT, Darren moved to offensive guard in 2009 and spent the season learning his new position. After playing as a reserve guard in 2010, Powe moved again this past spring to tackle due to depth and injury concerns.
Powe should see a fair amount of time on the field in his final year. Darren has experience at both guard and tackle, and can jump in pretty much anywhere if there's an injury or fatigue with only a small talent dropoff. After moving around so much here, I'm glad Powe finally has the experience to contribute this season.
