87 days left until the USF opener, and today we get to the smallest person on the roster.
Redshirt Sophomore, 5'5" 155 lbs.
Stats in 2010: Derrick participated in the Stony Brook and FAU games, but didn't record any stats. Flea did dominate the Big East this year in track, where he won the 60m and 200m dash at the Big East Indoor Championships. Hopkins also took the 100m title during the outdoor season.
Current Spot on Depth Chart: Hopkins is currently second on the post-spring depth chart at flanker behind Terrence Mitchell. (Keep in mind, though, that A.J. Love and Lindsey Lamar weren't included on the depth chart because they weren't in the Green and Gold Bowl.)
How did he come to USF: Hopkins came to USF via Miami Monsignor Pace, where he signed in 2008 with teammates Kayvon Webster and Sterling Griffin.
Recruiting Rankings: Hopkins was more of a track star at Pace, and was only given a two-star rating by Rivals and Scout. Hopkins did have offers from Kansas State, Iowa State, and Auburn.
Projected Playing Time for 2011: Hopkins looks like he will finally break in the rotation at wideout after a strong spring practice. Derrick had two catches for 87 yards in the spring game, including a 70-yard touchdown reception while working with Matt Floyd. Hopkins' speed will be utilized by Coach Holtz this year, and at the very least he should be a part of the kickoff team. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hopkins be utilized in screen packages along with Lindsey Lamar and Mitchell.
