Jupiter HS QB Tyler Cameron Commits To USF

Skip Holtz and his staff have pulled in another quality addition to their 2012 recruiting class. Tyler Cameron, a quarterback from Jupiter High School in Jupiter, Florida, has verbally committed to the South Florida Bulls.

Cameron is listed as a dual-threat quarterback, but he's more of a mobile pocket passer than a scrambler. He was one of 24 players invited to participate in the Elite 11 quarterback camp finals last month in Malibu, California, and is considered one of the top Florida QB prospects in the class of 2012.

Rivals gave Cameron four stars, ranking him #6 among all dual-threat QBs and #38 among all Florida prospects. (He's their highest rated quarterback prospect in the state, just ahead of Bennie Coney, who committed to Cincinnati last week.) Scout lists Cameron as a three-star prospect, as does the new USF-centric Bulls 247 site. Cameron chose the Bulls over a host of offers, including LSU, Illinois, Purdue, and Michigan State.

The new Bulls 247 site has several articles about the Cameron commitment, including an analysis of what he will mean to the Bulls:

At SuperBull this summer, Cameron ran a 4.6 forty at 215-pounds. He’s not as elusive as USF’s current starter, B.J. Daniels, he brings a different style. He’s a bruising runner who also runs with good speed. Although Cameron has the ability to run, he is considered a pocket passer. He is labeled a "dual-threat QB" by media outlets, but the Bulls would not have offered Cameron if he did not have the ability to stand in the pocket and distribute the football.

The article also notes a very important fact. Cameron is expected to be an early enrollee, which will make him available for spring practice next year. With B.J. Daniels heading into his senior year in 2012, it could give Tyler up to 18 months to prepare for the task of taking over as the Bulls' starting quarterback in 2013. (In fact, knowing that both Bobby Eveld and Matt Floyd are coming back next season, he could even redshirt and have a chance to start for several years.)

Another story from 247 has some quotes from Cameron, who looks like he's ready to dive in and help secure a few more commitments:

"I will be recruiting my butt off," said Cameron. "Evan Goodman and the receiver D’Vario Montgomery, I have been in contact with him. Whoever is out there."

Goodman is a four-star offensive guard from Lakeland High School who made a verbal commitment to Arizona State yesterday. (This might be a tough sell, since Goodman's brother also attends ASU.) Montgomery is a four-star receiver at Winter Park High School who has been offered by basically every legitimate college football team.

Ken's running scholarship count says that Holtz only has four scholarships left for 2012, so the quantity in this year's recruiting class may not be very big. But the quality looks like it will more than make up for it. Cameron is exactly the kind of player that the Bulls need to keep from leaving the state, and it's fantastic that the staff was able to bring him in.

TRIVIA: Cameron is a left-hander. We did some research and it appears that no left-handed quarterback has ever started a game for USF. In fact, we think only two lefties have ever thrown a pass for the Bulls. Can you name them?
