Ken Eriksen and the USF Softball team continue their hot start to the season after winning four of their five games over the weekend, including 3 victories at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater.
The Bulls grabbed victories over Illinois, Mississippi State, and a pair of victories over Illinois State. Only a late 5-3 loss to Boston University stopped the Bulls from grabbing a sweep for the second week in a row.
The USF pitching staff was sharp once again, giving up only 8 runs over the 5 games this weekend. Sara Nevins picked up a pair of wins, including a six-hit shutout against Mississippi State. Lindsey Richardson and Sam Greiner each picked up a win, with Richardson throwing a 3-hit shutout against Illinois in the weekend opener.
I've never seen it before in college, but USF beat Mississippi State 1-0 despite being no-hit by Stephanie Becker. The Bulls' only run came in the 3rd, when pinch runner Ilaura Reeves scored on an error from 3rd baseman Sam Lanahan, who was trying to throw out Gina Kafalas on a bunt attempt. The ball hit Kafalas on the back and got away from 1st baseman Shelby Fisher and rolled into right field. That was all Nevins needed, who struck out 7 and didn't concede a walk in the game.
The softball team have a big test against Michigan this Wednesday at the USF Softball Stadium before participating in the USF Under Armour Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater.
