Today's player was a great recruiting story who should someday pay dividends on the field.

#84 WR Alex Mut
Freshman, 6'3" 191 lbs.

Stats in 2011: Wasn't even on the roster, as he grayshirted (deferred his enrollment), due to an injury that made him unable to play anyway.

Current Spot on Depth Chart: Not listed.

How did he come to USF: As recruiting stories go, it's a heartwarming tale. Mut was a strong commitment to USF, but tore his ACL two weeks before signing day 2011. Skip Holtz immediately reassured Mut that his scholarship offer would be honored, even though USF was not obligated, and other schools have yanked scholarship offers over injuries. He later deferred his enrollment to USF, which meant 2011 didn't count as a year of eligibility, and that Mut didn't count against USF's scholarship limit at the time. That gave USF the roster space to add transfers Chris Dunkley and Mike McFarland.

Recruiting Rankings: Rivals and Scout each gave him 3 stars, ESPN 2. Those ratings may have been negatively impacted by the injury, since the recruiting banter at the time seemed to put Mut in the same class as Ruben Gonzalez and Andre Davis.

Projected Playing Time For 2012: Because Mut grayshirted in 2011, he can also redshirt a year and still play four seasons. And he is a candidate to redshirt this season, especially after he reinjured his knee in a spring scrimmage, which required additional surgery. But Skip Holtz isn't shy about playing freshmen if they're good enough to be on the field, so Mut will be out there if he is ready to contribute this season.
