Skip Holtz and the USF football team picked up another local prospect today as Plant OLB Mitchell Wright announced his intentions to become a Bull today at his high school. Wright chose USF over Boston College and also had offers from Florida Atlantic and UMass.
The 6'3", 210 lb Wright normally plays at defensive end at Plant, but he has spent some time at outside linebacker and that's where USF will plan to use him once he arrives on campus. Last year, Mitchell totaled 73 tackles, 10 sacks and 29 tackles for a loss. His biggest game of the season came in the state championship game against Miramar, where Wright racked up 14 tackles, 5 sacks and forced a fumble.
From the highlight reel below, Wright has a really good motor and has a knack of finding the ball carrier. Wright got off of the ball real well and was able to evade most blockers with his speed and quickness. I think he will have a pretty easy transition to OLB, and until he can find a spot on the two-deep Wright will shine on special teams. Early playing time might also be in the cards for Wright, with SLB Sam Barrington and top backup Mike Jeune graduating after this season.
Both Scout and Rivals list him as a 2-star recruit, and 247 hasn't issued a rating yet.
For those counting at home, this is a 2nd Plant player ever to commit to USF, following fellow linebacker Donte Spires, who signed with USF back in 2005. Mitchell is the first linebacker commit in the Class of 2013 and the 11th overall. Wright is also the 4th player to commit from the Tampa Bay area.
