It's over. You survived. But the trauma can last a very long time.
The American Psychological Association has a web page talking about the effects of psychotherapy on patients. It reads as follows:
Q. How exactly does psychotherapy help people?
A. Patients often come to psychotherapy with explanations for their difficulties that leave them feeling that the distress will continue indefinitely. Every treatment provides an explanation for the distress that is adaptive - that is, the patient understands that he or she can do something to improve his or her situation. This leads the patient into healthy actions in that the psychotherapy improves some aspect of their lives, whether it is thinking more positive thoughts, creating better relationships, more appropriately expressing emotions, or enacting other positive changes. The critical aspect is not which treatment a person receives but rather that the patient believes this particular treatment is effective and works collaboratively with the therapist.
Your friendly V5 staff has an open door policy, and is here for you to talk about the previous football season. We know the trauma associated with watching a once-great rising star plummet to earth can leave scars both visible and unseen. We're here to help you heal.
So talk about it here. How did the 2013 season hurt you? Were you an enabler, continuing to go to every game and rescheduling your life just to have it lash out at you again? Did you empower the team to take advantage of yourself and others? And what can you do to take that power back?
We'll put together a word cloud out of all the things you discuss, and we'll also talk about corrective behaviors we can all implement to make sure these things don't happen again. Say how much it hurts to love something that doesn't love itself enough. Work through the pain by talking about it.
This is a judgement free zone. If you need to act out and get in touch with your id without remorse, it's fine. Normally we ask you to hold back on assessments of coaches that don't have their own players or players that are cast into a system for which they weren't recruited, but feel free to let out everything you're feeling as part of your primal scream. Your feelings are ok whatever they are. It's alright to be angry or bitter or feel rejected.
It's not your fault. It's not your fault.
