Olympic Sports Have Ups and Downs on Busy Weekend

New, 3 comments

Sometimes in the excitement of football season, fans tend to lose interest in the other sports the school has to offer. Luckily for those sports, I don't think many people will continue having much interest in football for a while. The Men's Tennis team started their season this past weekend up at the Duke Fab Four invitational tournament alongside North Carolina, Dike. Elon, Radford, Louisville, Virginia Commonwealth, Wake Forest, and William & Mary. Freshman Vadym Kalyuzhnyy won his first career match and advanced to the quarterfinal (finishing 15th), while Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz finished third in his bracket. USF's highlight of the tournament was when their doubles team of Gonzalez-Muniz and Oliver Pramming took the top bracket's championship. Everth Dzib made it to the quarterfinals of the Fab Four tournament before road tripping out west to Athens, GA to take another quarterfinal finish before losing to Clemson.

On the pitch, the Men await a trip to South Carolina next weekend after suffering a bittering 0-2 loss to Wisconsin on Thursday. The women were active, however, coming off a 0-1 loss to #18 South Carolina but rebounding strongly with a 1-1 draw in double overtime with #9 Florida, the lone goal for the Bulls scored by who else but Sharla Passiarello. Their next match will be Friday against South Alabama.

Finally, volleyball had a mixed weekend, with a very strong, yet unfinishing performance against Pitt, losing 2-3 on Friday night. They turned things around with a 3-0 win against FAU on Saturday afternoon before getting swept by #22 Purdue later that night. The volleyball team will be playing their next game against Northwestern, IUPUI, and Miami (FL) in Chicago as part of the Northwestern Invitational tournament.
