In the Protect Your Unit game, we talk about being degenerates, but in a very light-hearted way. Sports gambling can get scary, though, which we were reminded of this week. Sports gambling website covers.com took to the social media with this question:
#CoversContest What's the dodgiest/sketchiest spot you've ever placed a sports bet? Best answer wins some Covers gear pic.twitter.com/1wRnomPdwV
— Covers (@Covers) September 24, 2014
The answers, some of which were compiled by SBNation, were... uh... interesting:
@Covers #coverscontest ditched my wife on our anniversary vacation in the "Ripley's Believe it or Not" museum to fake a poop. Bet lost.
— Brandon Morris (@BCMorris917) September 24, 2014
@Covers back room of a candy store next to a women's clothing store.

@BCMorris917 @Covers In mexico on the Oaxaca coast, found a cockfighting match late night- placed a bet, won and left very quickly after!!
— Chris Coleman (@ChrisColeman14) September 24, 2014
@Covers at all you can eat Chinese buffet, my phone fell in the plum sauce so i grabbed it with my hand and finished the bet dripping sauce
— HIGHStakes (@HIGHStakes5) September 24, 2014
Some answers were ironic:
@Covers In an NCAA student-athlete "no-gambling" seminar
— Chicago Degen (@washeduptourpro) September 24, 2014
Some answers were sort of appropriate:
@Covers at a floyed mayweather book signing #CoversContest
— HIGHStakes (@HIGHStakes5) September 24, 2014
But this contest had a clear winner:
@Covers 6 cans of tuna to win 5 on the Bucs to win the super bowl over the raiders in the Sheridan Oregon Federal Prison
— Tim (@vegastbone) September 24, 2014
Strangest place I ever placed a bet was the back room of a Subway. The owner had a guy. I took Utah +21 over Air Force, knowing only that Utah had a good passing game (Scott Mitchell was their QB at the time) and three touchdowns was a lot for an option team to cover. Utah covered, and for awhile I was the football betting whiz kid.
That's as exciting as my life gets. For more entertaining stories, check out Covers' longer list of replies.
Let's get on to who you picked this week:
One bit of housekeeping: chuckycrater and ULismyhothotsex originally had incorrect dollar totals, due to an error in my script that inadvertently devalued their earlier parlay wins.. They have since been corrected. No one else was affected. As always, you can check your bet history in the protectyouru.net View Picks page.
The three SEC West games, and East Carolina-SMU, seem to be getting the most action. Talk about who you picked and why in the space below. Share your opinions about this USF-less weekend of football. Tell weird betting stories if you have one. Above all else, have fun!
