This matchup is like the "anything you can do, I can do better" game in reverse. USF has had a lot of trouble moving the ball and stopping their opponents, but they have not been nearly as bad as the Mustangs, who are objectively the worst team in FBS this season. Here are just a few of their national rankings coming into tonight's game:
- Wins: 0 (125th out of 125)
- Scoring Offense: 9.6 points per game (125th)
- Scoring Defense: 46.8 points per game (125th)
- Sacks Allowed Per Game: 5.13 (125th)
- Total Defense: 547 yards per game (125th)
- Total Offense: 276.3 yards per game (123rd)
- Rushing Offense: 89.4 yards per game (120th)
- 3rd Down %: 31.3% (116th)
- Takeaways: 6 (124th)
- Giveaways: 21 (113th)
Like USF, though, the Mustangs do have some hope generated by their newly-minted starting quarterback, sophomore Matt Davis. Against Tulsa last week, he completed 21 of 32 passes for 212 yards, and ran for another 181 yards, the most by a quarterback in SMU history. The 38-28 loss to the Golden Hurricane was the first one for SMU by less than 21 points this season.
Two struggling teams playing in really rough weather (breezy, temperatures in the 40s, rain showers), and potentially a lot on the line for Willie Taggart if they get upset by this SMU team. Come chat with us.
