(DISCLAIMER: This contest is for entertainment purposes only. No actual money is being wagered.)
I know the rule discussions have been frequent lately, but we need to discuss Hurricane Matthew’s impact on the game.
First, due to Florida being impacted by the severe storm, I hereby decree that Week 6 is a free bye week. If you don't get in your required wagers, you do not have to spend your bye week now. I'm granting a free pass, in respect of people who may have needed to prepare for the storm. I may do the same next week, depending on the severity of the aftermath, and whether or not Matthew loops around to whack Florida again. I AM THE LORD OF PROTECT YOUR UNIT. I HAVE THIS KIND OF POWER. APPEASE YOUR GOD. BWAHAHAHAHAHA -- I'm so sorry, I got carried away.
Now on to game postponements and cancellations. SB Nation is keeping a list of all of them here.
Tulane-Central Florida has been postponed to November 5. LSU-Florida has been postponed indefinitely. All wagers on those two games have been voided. If you still want to bet on those games when they are played later on, you will have to re-enter your bet at that time.
Georgia-South Carolina and Charlotte-FAU have been moved to Sunday. UMass-Old Dominion was moved to Friday. Wagers on these games remain in effect. You may make new wagers, or include them in new parlay wagers, if desired, and if lines are available.
No existing parlay wagers included any of the affected games, so we don't have to make accommodations for that. If this were to occur, we would apply the rule whereby pushes are removed from the parlay, and the results are re-calculated as a 2-way parlay, or a single wager without vigorish.
If you placed a wager on any of these games before they were cancelled, they still count towards meeting the 3 bets/1 AAC bet/5% of your stack requirements. Since I'm giving a free pass on this week anyway, this is largely moot, but I want to be consistent with how this is handled in other situations.
If any further games are not played this weekend, they will be handled as above. This is all following the official rules.
One thing the rules are not clear about is whether or not you can re-use any money that was wagered on cancelled games. I'm going to say "no" to that. I feel that the game being cancelled is part of the risk that is taken when a bet on a game is placed. You don't get to revise your bet when other events occur, such as player injury, or adverse weather conditions. And I think being able to change one of the components of a parlay wager would go against the nature of a parlay.
So those who bet the Florida and Tulane games are locked into wagers they can neither win nor lose. This may prove to be advantageous or disadvantageous to them. But I don't think it's fair to let players change how that money is allocated. It opens a can of worms whereby some players will want to re-wager and others won't; potentially ambiguous situations may arise; and I'll have to manually keep track of it all. I am comfortable treating these games as cancelled or non-completed games are treated.
