USF Football Player Profile: #80 WR Trevor Steinke

Career profile of USF wide receiver Trevor Steinke.

NCAA Football: Birmingham Bowl-South Florida vs South Carolina Shanna Lockwood-USA TODAY Sports

#80 WR Trevor Steinke - Senior, 5’11”, 187 lbs.

That’s Pronounced... STAIN-key.

2016 Stats: Steinke did not appear in any games.

2015 Stats: Trevor did not play after joining the team in fall. If he had a redshirt year, he took it.

How He Came To USF: This is (still) Steinke's entire bio on GoUSFBulls.com: "A graduate of Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Steinke joined the team as a walk-on wide receiver in the fall of 2015." That, friends, is obscure. So let's find out some more.

A 2013 Tampa Bay Times article explains much of Steinke's backstory. He started at Freedom High School in Tampa and planned to transfer to Hillsborough as a junior in 2011 to play running back. But there was a paperwork mixup that wasn't sorted out until after he had already played for the Terriers in a 7-on-7 tournament. The FHSAA declared him ineligible, and he only got to play in two games. Then in 2012, Steinke broke his leg at USF's Sling and Shoot tournament and missed most of the season. After two solid years of rotten luck, Webber International University, an NAIA school near Lake Wales, gave Steinke a chance and awarded him a scholarship for their 2013 recruiting class.

Yes, it was long enough ago that both David Letterman and Craig Ferguson still had TV shows.

Steinke switched to wide receiver, but did not record any statistics in 2013. He transferred from Webber to USF in fall 2014, and he came through USF's walk-on tryout process in spring 2015 to join the team that fall.

Recruiting Rankings: Steinke was not ranked by any of the recruiting services.
