In our latest installment of Watch List Watch, two #BayMade products join preseason watch lists. Redshirt sophomore tight end Mitchell Wilcox (Tarpon Springs) and center Cameron Ruff (Jesuit) made the Mackey Award watch list and Rimington Trophy watch list, respectively.
Wilcox is one of 55 players on the Mackey list. A USF tight end is on the watch list for the third straight year, joining former Bull Sean Price (2015) and current teammate Elkano Dillon (2016).
Wilcox was known more as an impact blocker on the edge and downfield for the Gulf Coast Offense, but still made an impact in the passing game with 12 receptions for 278 yards (23.2 YPC) and two touchdowns.
You may remember his second touchdown a bit more than that first.
I’d say fast forward to 3:34 to see him man handle future second round pick Obi Melifonwu, but then you’d miss Quinton Flowers sonning the entire UConn defense on one of the greatest runs in USF history (which Wilcox was downfield blocking). Wilcox also helped spring Marlon Mack for a TD in this game as well.
Ruff is one of 71 players named to the watch list for the Rimington, which is awarded to the best center in the country. The senior started all 13 games in 2016 to help them set program records in touchdowns (77), rushing touchdowns (47), rushing yards (3,714) and total offense (6,650), paving the way for two separate 1,000-yard rushers in Flowers and Mack. Ruff and fellow senior Jeremi Hill will be tasked with keeping the offensive line on the same page and Flowers upright in 2017.
Hopefully this doesn’t happen too often this year (sorry Cam):
