This is a big day for our blog’s Jonathan Hernandez fandom. Not only is today Hernandez’s scheduled profile day (only 44 days left until San Jose State), but yesterday we found out he had been added to the watch list for the Ray Guy Award, given to the best punter in the country.

Our wondrous Large Adult Punter walked on to the USF football team last summer, quickly won the starting job, and then played so well early in the season that he was added to the 2016 Ray Guy Award watch list. He started dropping punt after punt inside the 20-yard line, and often pinned opponents a lot closer to their own goal line than that. For the season, he punted 63 times for a 41.2 yard average. He put 25 punts inside the opponents’ 20, including five punts each against Syracuse and SMU, tying the school record. He also put three punts inside the 10 against Cincinnati, and had only one (1) touchback all year.
Hernandez is the fifth USF player on a preseason watch list. We expect there will be even more in the next few days. Stay tuned for the next episode of Watch List Watch.
