2017: Played in all 12 games throughout the season, totaling a career high 18 tackles (three for loss) and one pass breakup.
2016: Black made appearances in seven games. He made seven tackles (four of them against Syracuse), 1.5 TFL, and 1.5 sacks. He also forced a fumble on a sack of Towson quarterback Ellis Knudson at the end of USF’s season-opening win.
2015: Josh battled a nasty hamstring injury and did not play. (He’s listed on the participation chart against Navy, but since he’s still classified as a junior, maybe that was just a typo.)
2014: Black played in the last five games of 2014 as a true freshman and started the season finale against C. He recorded a sack against Cincinnati, and had three tackles against Houston and C., for a total of seven.
How He Came To USF: Josh played at Sickles High School in Tampa. Black went berserk his senior year, rolling up 103 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 20(!) sacks, and three forced fumbled for the Gryphons as they went 11-2 and reached the regional finals. He was named to the Class 7A all-state first team and received the Tampa Bay Times' Defensive Player of the Year award. Black had offers from Arizona, Iowa State, and Minnesota, and committed to Marshall two weeks before signing day, but when it was time to put pen to paper, Josh chose USF.
Recruiting Rankings: Josh was a three-star recruit according to all the recruiting sites.
