For a school as young as USF, it would normally be tough to find a person who exemplifies what the Human Highlight Reel is all about. Thankfully there is one player who has gone above and beyond in terms of service while also producing on the field, and that man is Zak Boggs.
Boggs came to USF as a transfer from UCF, and he immediately made an impact both on and off the pitch. Boggs scored 9 goals and 6 assists in his two seasons at USF, and was one of the leaders of the 2008 Men's Soccer Team that made it to the Elite Eight. He was named a 3rd Team All-Big East performer in 2009 and won the 2010 Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup Award while also being named a finalist for the Sullivan Award and was nominated for the Rhodes Scholarship.
Boggs' play on the pitch was only trumped by his desire to help others off of it. While earning his degree in biomedical sciences, Boggs volunteered his time around the Bay Area, including helping out at the Shriners Children's Hospital and Moffitt Cancer Center on campus while also working at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota. Boggs also worked as a tutor, helping students in calculus, chemistry, economics, biology, and algebra.
After leaving USF, Boggs was drafted by the New England Revolution in the 2nd Round of the MLS SuperDraft and has been a solid squad player for the Revs. Boggs has seen his playing time increase over the past two seasons as he started 16 games for the Revs this year while scoring 3 goals in his two seasons at Foxborough.
While Boggs has started to make an impact on the field, his work off of it has turned heads around the country. Boggs has been volunteering his time at the Karp Research Building of Children's Hospital Boston. Boggs is putting his biomedical sciences degree to work, giving his free time to cancer research during the year.
The MLS recgonized Zak's effort in the research lab, and presented Boggs with the 22011 MLS Humanitarian Of The Year award. MLS also donated $5,000 to the Children's Hospital Boston research lab as they continue to battle and find a cure of cancer.
