A record-breaking pitching performance and some heads up baserunning from Alex Mendez leads the USF Bulls to a 2-1 victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at the New Red McEwen Stadium Friday night in Tampa. James Ramsey was able to beat the throw by Pat Sweeney, and the speedy Mendez was able to race home from second for the winning run.
The game was highlighted by a dominating performance from our pitching staff, as Randy Fontanez, Kevin Quackenbush, Junior Carlin, and Jimmy Moran combined to strike out a USF record 19 Scarlet Knights out Friday. Fontanez had another solid pitching performance, striking out 10 and only giving up 3 hits and 1 unearned run in 8 strong innings. Quackenbush, Carlin, and Moran held the fort, not allowing a hit and striking out 9 in 5 innings of relief.
As well as our pitching staff was yesterday, our offense was unable to match its production. Junior Carlin and Andrew Longley had 2 hits each, but 2 runs and only 7 hits in 13 innings will not get it done most nights in college baseball. Thankfully our pitching staff was able to rise up to the occasion.
USF and Rutgers will be back in action tonight at 7PM as part of USF Day at the New Red.
