Georgetown Goes Down Swinging To USF, 6-0

Andrew Barbosa, the ace of the USF pitching staff, struck out 11 of the first 13 Hoyas he faced, and 13 overall in six shutout innings, as the Bulls won their first Big East game of 2012 over Georgetown 6-0 last night at the USF Baseball Stadium.

USF wasted no time jumping on the team picked to finish last in the Big East preseason coaches' poll. With Alex Mendez on base, James Ramsay hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead. They added two more in the second and another in the third, giving Barbosa plenty of cushion. He threw 90 pitches in his six innings of work, allowing just two walks along with the one hit and the 13 strikeouts.

The Hoyas swung and missed all night long. Adrian Puig collected two more K's in his two shutout innings of work, and Nick Gonzalez struck out the side in the ninth for a total of 18 strikeouts on the night. Seven of the nine Georgetown batters struck out at least twice.

USF is now 15-8 on the season. Game 2 of this three-game weekend series is Saturday at 6:00pm in the USF Baseball Stadium.
