The Bulls' other potential starting kicker is up next on the countdown.
#27 K Marvin Kloss
Redshirt Sophomore, 6'0" 198 lbs.
Stats in 2011: Kloss didn't score any points last year, but he did handle kickoffs for USF, recording nine touchbacks on 71 kickoffs. (And remember, last year college kickoffs still came from the 30-yard line. They've moved up to the 35-yard line this season, like they already had in the NFL.) Marvin also had two tackles, which was a symptom of USF's shambolic kick coverage team.
Current Spot on Depth Chart: Kloss is listed as a co-starter with Maikon Bonani for the kickoff specialist's job.
How Did He Come To USF: Although Purdue offered him a scholarship, and Florida offered preferred walk-on status to him, Marvin chose a preferred walk-on offer from USF in 2010. At Naples' Barron Collier High School, Kloss made 91 of 92 extra points and hit all eight field goals he attempted as a senior. And just for fun, he also played a little wide receiver and running back, scoring two touchdowns.
Recruiting Rankings: Scout listed Kloss as a three-star prospect, and ESPN.com ranked him as the 7th best kicker in the nation in the class of 2010.
Projected Playing Time for 2012: Kloss probably won't get many placekicking chances unless Bonani gets hurt or comes totally unglued. But I think we'll see him continue to kick off. Next year he'll have his chance to take over as the regular kicker.
