USF (9-3) dropped the first game of a two-game series to #2 FSU Tuesday in front of a record crowd of 3,615 (previous record was 3,211), by a score of 5-1. The Bulls had a solid first inning defensively, then almost completely collapsed in the second. Brett Kneif started things out with a solo homer, then three more runs followed thanks to a couple singles, a wild pitch, and a fielding error.
Buddy Putnam got the lone run for the Bulls off a solo home-run in the bottom of the second. Kyle Teaf is the only Bull who had a multi-hit game, going 2-4. Starter Janick Serrallonga only lasted 2.2 innings and gave up five runs off seven hits.
The Bulls got some solid innings from their relievers, though. Through a combined 6.1 innings- Nolan Thomas, Michael Farley, and Tommy Peterson gave up only one hit and no runs. That was an encouraging sign for the Bulls and they will hope to build off of that in game two.
FSU (9-1) had a solid game all around. Starter Peter Miller went five innings, giving up four hits and one run and picking up 11 strikeouts. John Nogowski went 2-4 and scored twice. Aside from the second inning, they were effectively held off the board (except for a walked-in run in the third) for the rest of the game.
But onto the FSU coverage everyone really cares about: Jameis Winston. Although he didn't have much of an impact in the actual game- he did, however, become the center of attention immediately after coming into the game to DH. In short, USF pitcher Michael Farley seemed to have a vendetta against Winston and nearly hit him on back to back pitches (he missed the second). Winston's final stat line was 0-1.
The final game of the series is today at 3:00 PM at the USF Baseball Stadium. The Bulls will then host Northwestern this weekend for a three-game series, kicking off Friday at 7:00 PM at the USF Baseball Stadium.
