Only Nate Ferguson Days Until USF Football Season

#37 has definite talent and a strong pedigree -- but then so does everyone ahead of him on the depth chart.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

#37 DB Nate Ferguson
Sophomore, 5'9", 180 lbs.

2015 Stats: Ferguson appeared in five games as a true freshman and made two tackles -- one in the first game of the year against Florida A&M, and the other in the last game of the year against Western Kentucky.

Position on Depth Chart: Ferguson is not listed on the post-spring depth chart.

How He Came To USF: Nate played his senior year at Tampa's Sickles High School, after transferring from nearby Gaither. Even though he only was able to play five games for the Gryphons (at least according to the MaxPreps stats), Nate had 28 tackles, three TFL, an interception, and two blocked kicks. Ferguson flipped from Eastern Michigan to USF right before signing day in February 2015.

Here are the highlights from Nate's senior year at Sickles:

Recruiting Rankings: 247 and Scout gave Ferguson three stars. Scout gave him two, while ESPN did not rate him.

Projected Playing Time: Nate got a bit unlucky last year. Even though he was good enough to play as a true freshman, another true freshman (Ronnie Hoggins) and a redshirt freshman (Mazzi Wilkins) were even better and jumped ahead of him on the depth chart. His opportunities on defense may be limited this year, but he could make a real impact on special teams in the coverage and kick blocking units.
