It’s the first appearance in a preseason poll for USF since 2008.

The USF Bulls will begin the 2017 football season ranked 21st in the ESPN-USA Today Coaches' Poll.

The Bulls are the only Group of 5 team ranked in the top 25, giving them a leg up in the chase for a prestigious New Year's Six bowl game. Boise State leads the chasing pack in the "Others Receiving Votes" category. Memphis (22 points), Tulsa (10), Temple (8), and Houston (7) are the other teams in The American receiving preseason votes.

For USF, this is their first preseason ranking since 2008. That year the Bulls opened up #19 in the Associated Press poll, and #21 in the coaches' poll. USF started the 2008 season 5-0 and reached as high as #10 in both polls before sputtering badly in Big East conference play and finishing with an 8-5 record.

At the top of the poll, Alabama unsurprisingly sits at #1. They're followed by Ohio State, Florida State, USC, and defending champion Clemson. Florida is ranked 16th, two spots ahead of Miami.
