The Alonso High alumnus batted at an even .500 clip (7-for-14), with a home run, three RBI, and four runs scored. He also converted 9-of-10 chances in the field at the shortstop position, as USF notched a series win against defending SOCON champion Samford.
Gonzalez was penciled into the nine-hole on Opening Day, where he hit a three-run home run in his first collegiate at-bat. He went 2-for-4 in that game, before being catapulted to the lead-off spot for the final two games of the weekend.
He finished with multi-hit games in both of those contests and scored three runs.
A single from the freshman in the second inning on Sunday set the table for Jordan Santos to rip a go-ahead two-run double in the Bulls’ 4-1 victory.
“Nicky’s like a veteran,” USF coach Billy Mohl said on Sunday. “He’s got a real knack for finding the barrel.”
The Bulls return to action on Tuesday, playing host to the #5 Florida Gators at the USF Baseball Complex. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
