I’ve learned per sources with knowledge of the situation, that the South Florida Bulls men’s basketball team will face the Florida College Falcons on Feburary 19 at 4 p.m. inside the Yuengling Center as the replacement game for the contest between the Bulls and UNC-Charlotte 49ers that was canceled due to travel difficulties caused by a winter storm in early December.
USF and Charlotte made every attempt to reschedule the game with during the week of Febuary 17-23, but with Conference USA rolling out their new flex scheduling that weekend, Charlotte’s athletic director Mike Hill did not want to add another mid-week game when he wouldn’t know where his team would be playing that weekend.
The Bulls petitioned the NCAA to have their exhibition game with the University of Tampa from October 30 count as a real game although the game was played outside of the permissible calendar for games to count and as a result wouldn’t have to schedule another team if they didn’t have to do so. The NCAA denied their petition stating that they didn’t want this outcome to set a precedent with other schools trying to game the system for potentially extra wins.
Florida College is in the Southern States Athletic Conference at the NAIA level. The Falcons are 11-12, 5-10 SSAC this year. They are averaging 85.2 points per game, and have five different players scoring in double figures. The 2018 Hillsborough County Player of the Year Matt Simpson (Plant City HS) is averaging 12 PPG on 58% shooting from the field.
The game should not affect USF’s NET rating which currently 70th nationally.
