#85 WR Alex Mut
Junior, 6'3", 205 lbs.
Stats in 2014: Alex appeared in 11 games, starting one against NC State. He was mainly used in run blocking, though he did see a few balls come his way toward the end of the season.
Spot on Spring Depth Chart: Not listed.
How He Came to USF: Slowly. He graduated from Charlotte High School (in Punta Gorda) back in 2011. While playing on the school basketball team, he wrecked his ACL, right before Signing Day. Skip Holtz went out of his way to say that USF would honor their scholarship offer. Mut later grayshirted (deferred enrollment) until 2012 to recuperate. That helped give USF the roster space to add transfers Chris Dunkley and Mike McFarland. Mut also had shoulder surgery before the 2012 season, and further shoulder problems in 2013.
Recruiting Rankings: Rivals and Scout each gave him 3 stars. ESPN.com gave him 2. Alex was an early and strong commitment to USF, so wasn't much pursued by other schools.
Projected Playing Time: Mut has carved a bit of a niche for himself as a blocker and special teamer, so he'll find playing time no matter what the receiver rotation looks like. That said, he seems to have been passed on the depth chart by a few younger players (Bronson, Clerveaux) and transfers (Legree)-- and this is before the incoming recruits hit campus-- so I wouldn't expect him to rack up many receptions.
Fun Fact: Alex is smarter than you. He was named to the Big East All-Academic Team in 2012 and the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team in 2013 and 2014. He also earned USF's Academic Excellence Award.
