Stampeding The 2014 USF Football Roster - #84 WR Alex Mut

Unlike AMUT in the original Final Fantasy game, this A. Mut is useful.

Today's player is hoping to overcome long a series of injuries.

#84 WR Alex Mut
Redshirt Sophomore, 6'3", 203 lbs.

Stats in 2013: Appeared in five games, the last five of the season. He was listed as "questionable" in some of the early-season games, like Miami. Did not produce any stats.

Spot on 2013 Depth Chart: Not listed. The two-deep depth chart lists two WR positions, and all four of those players return.

How did he come to USF: Slowly. He graduated from Charlotte High School (in Punta Gorda) back in 2011. While playing on the school basketball team, he wrecked his ACL, right before Signing Day. Skip Holtz went out of his way to say that USF would honor their scholarship offer. Mut later grayshirted (deferred enrollment) until 2012 to recuperate. He also had shoulder surgery before the 2012 season, and further shoulder problems in 2013.

Recruiting Ratings: Rivals and Scout each gave him 3 stars. ESPN.com gave him 2. Was an early and strong commitment to USF, so wasn't much pursued by other schools.

Projected Playing Time In 2014: Could be on the way up. Unlike many holdovers from the Holtz era, Mut has earned public praise from the new coaching staff:

"(Mut) can play all over the field. He can play the X, Z and the slot. He really knows the offense." -- David Reaves, USF quarterbacks coach

In the spring game, he led the (losing) green team with 6 receptions. Mut will compete with Toledo transfer Robert Adams, returning seniors like Deonte Welch, and Taggart recruits like Zach Benjamin for a spot in the receiver rotation.

Fun Fact: Whenever Mike McFarland or Chris Dunkley makes a catch this season, give a little credit to Alex Mut. Mut's agreeing to defer his enrollment from 2011 to 2012 freed up a roster spot when the Bulls were looking to add these players as transfers.
