Stampeding The 2014 USF Football Roster - #48 TE Spencer Adkinson

Today's player got one of the harshest suspensions in Florida high school history.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

#48 TE Spencer Adkinson
Redshirt Freshman, 6'3", 232 lbs.

Stats in 2013: Redshirted.

Spot on 2013 Depth Chart: Not listed.

How did he come to USF: From Indian Rocks Christian in Seminole, where his high school career was marred by an unfortunate incident. In his school's biggest game of the year, against rival Admiral Farragut, a game-tying two-point conversion pass to Adkinson was ruled incomplete. In protesting, Adkinson bumped the referee. The FHSAA came down with a draconian "Level 3" suspension of one full year, under the "egregious unsportsmanlike conduct" codicil. (To put that into perspective, punching a player is only a Level 2/six-week suspension, even if it's part of a huge post-game brawl that sent two people to the hospital.)

After several appeals, the FHSAA agreed only to shorten the suspension to 363 days, to allow Adkinson to appear in next year's game vs. Farragut. He did not squander the chance, scoring 10 tackles and 50 yards receiving in an upset win.

Recruiting Ratings: Not rated by any major recruiting service.

Projected Playing Time In 2014: Probably not much, since he's a walk-on and there is a lot of depth at the tight end position.

Fun Fact: "Fun" isn't the word you'd use for it, but it is noteworthy that Adkinson became a cause celebre for those trying to get FHSAA to reconsider their suspension policy. Several Tampa Bay area players had suspensions shortened or dropped in the aftermath.
