South Florida Bulls quarterback Gerry Bohanon was named to the Davey O’Brien preseason watch list on Tuesday which is given annually to the top QB in the country. Bohanon transferred to USF after leading the Baylor Bears to a Big 12 championship and helped them win the Sugar Bowl over Ole Miss.

[This is where we’d embed USF’s tweet and awesome graphic about Bohanon being named to the list, but it doesn’t exist for reasons unknown]

The former Baylor QB threw for 2,200 yards, 18 touchdowns (only seven INTs), and added another nine rushing scores in 2021. He battled nagging injuries for chunks of the season, but battled through it.

He comes to Tampa to compete for the QB1 job against Timmy McClain, and Katravis Marsh. How much of a competition it truly is remains to be seen. Typically you don’t bring in someone of Bohanon’s status (he had some SEC offers) to ride the pine.

The 6’3, 221 lbs Arkansas native is joined by two other AAC QBs in SMU’s Tanner Mordecai, and Houston’s Clayton Tune, both of whom USF plays in 2022. The Bulls will also face BYU’s Jaren Hall, and Louisville’s Malik Cunningham who were also named to the preseason watch list.

USF opens the season September 3 versus BYU at 4 p.m.
