(EDITOR’S NOTE: There is unofficially another #25 on the field for USF named Marcus Wingate. Hopefully with Willie Taggart holding his first press conference of the season today, the full roster will be confirmed and we can get to work on profiling all the newest Bulls.)
#25 DB Cameron Gergley
Redshirt Sophomore, 6’0", 180 lbs.
2015 Stats: Cameron appeared in two games last season and made his only tackle of the season in the Miami Beach Bowl.
Position on Depth Chart: Gergley is not listed on the post-spring depth chart.
How He Came To USF: Gergley played safety at Winter Park High School. Despite nine interceptions in his last two years with the Wildcats, a trip to the 2013 state playoffs, and a famous last name (his grandfather coached Winter Park for many years and their stadium is named after him), he could not rustle up any FBS scholarship offers. Stetson recruited him, but being in a non-scholarship league meant the $38,000 annual tuition was prohibitive. Instead of signing with the Hatters or one of the other FCS schools that showed interest, most notably Coastal Carolina, Cameron chose to walk on to the USF team in the fall of 2014.
Here are Gergley’s senior year highlights:
Recruiting Rankings: Cameron wasn’t a completely unrated prospect - he did get two stars from Rivals.
Projected Playing Time: Cameron is still listed as a safety on the roster, although he calls himself a corner. Either way, the Bulls have a lot of defensive backs to choose from, and even more just arrived at fall practice. Playing time on defense might be unlikely, but Gergley did make appearances on the kick coverage team last season, and he could continue to get on the field on special teams this year.
