After a few very recognizable names in the 80s, we come now to maybe the most obscure player on the entire roster. Let's meet one of USF's two #80s.
#80 WR Trevor Steinke
Redshirt Freshman, 5'11", 184 lbs.
That's Pronounced... STAIN-key.
2015 Stats: Steinke joined the team last fall and took a redshirt year.
Position on Depth Chart: Trevor is not listed on the post-spring depth chart.
How He Came To USF: This is Steinke's entire bio on GoUSFBulls.com: "A graduate of Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Steinke joined the team as a walk-on wide receiver in the fall of 2015." That, friends, is obscure. So let's find out some more.
A 2013 Tampa Bay Times article explains much of Steinke's backstory. He started at Freedom High School in Tampa and planned to transfer to Hillsborough as a junior in 2011 to play running back. But there was a paperwork mixup that wasn't sorted out until after he had already played for the Terriers in a 7-on-7 tournament. The FHSAA declared him ineligible, and he only got to play in two games. Then in 2012, Steinke broke his leg at USF's Sling and Shoot tournament and missed most of the season. After two solid years of rotten luck, Webber International University, an NAIA school near Lake Wales, gave Steinke a chance and awarded him a scholarship for their 2013 recruiting class.
Steinke switched to wide receiver, but did not record any statistics in 2013. He transferred from Webber to USF in fall 2014, and I'm guessing he came through USF's walk-on tryout process in spring 2015 to join the team last fall.
P.S. I don't know the rules governing NAIA to NCAA transfers, so I have no idea if his redshirt freshman classification is right. Ask your nearest NCAA compliance officer.
Recruiting Rankings: Steinke was not ranked by any of the recruiting services.
Projected Playing Time: There are far too many receivers ahead of Steinke for him to get much playing time this year. But now that we know Trevor's backstory, I'm really hoping we see him in a game at some point.
